Children's Health
Basic health coverage from birth, through school
Tanzania has a good health and vaccination system for children under 5 years, but from 5 years and onward there is a lack of basic health coverage. In our Children`s Health program we support the government with school health check-ups for children in pre-schools and primary schools in Tanga, as well as support to local health centers. The program consists of to main areas; School Health, and Children under 5.
Many of the health problems we find during our check-ups are preventable and easily treatable conditions like: wounds, scabies, fungus, bad teeth, poor eyesight, ear infections and worms among others. We also come across children with very difficult living conditions and severe illnesses.

School Health
Launched in 2011, this program provides essential healthcare to kindergarten and primary school children in Tanga. By offering regular health check-ups, doctor consultations, and treatment, we aim to identify and address health concerns early, ensuring children can focus on their education.
When serious health issues arise, we conduct follow-up home visits and refer children to hospitals for further care. The program also supports school health clubs, equipping them with first aid kits, educational resources, and training on topics like hygiene, nutrition, and mental health. Mobile clinics occasionally extend the services to entire communities, offering free health care, advice and treatment.

Pregnant mothers and children under 5
Children under the age of five are among the most vulnerable in our society. This program was established to enhance the health of pregnant mothers and young children (ages 0-5), ensuring they get the healthiest start in life. By promoting the overall well-being of young children, the program supports their ability to grow, meet their physical, mental, social, and spiritual needs, and achieve their educational goals as they mature.
The program operates through health checkups and the provision of services in reproductive and child health departments at local health centers in Tanga. It focuses on identifying and addressing childhood illnesses and nutrition challenges, such as malnutrition. It also connects children with specialized care from pediatricians, nutritionists, and physiotherapists, ensuring they receive the necessary support to thrive. Additionally, the program extends its reach through outreach activities, including Home Visits, and Under-the-tree meetings. Early interventions is at the heart of this initiative.
